Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Community Standards and Title IX, the Assistant Director assists in the daily operation and functioning of the office. The Assistant Director of Community Standards assists in overseeing and managing JSU student conduct system, facilitates student community outreach, educational programming and training. The Assistant Director ensures that the student conduct system adjudicates all nonacademic student conduct, and that student misconduct is supported by a philosophy of educating and supporting students while ensuring safety, security, and upholding the highest standards and expectations for ethical and responsible conduct. This position works closely with students, faculty, staff, administrators, University Police Department, and local police agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with case processing, monthly reports, assessment process, presentations, and training
  • Reporting to the Director of the Office of Community Standards and Title IX, the Assistant Director assists in the day-to-day operation and functioning of the office.
  • Assists in the administration of the policies and procedures related to the student conduct system including the interpretation, investigation, and enforcement of University policies by serving as an Administrative Hearing Office and investigator
  • Assists with the intake of reports, distribution of cases, and maintenance of Maxient conduct system; scheduling and preparing of correspondence; processing of student discipline information requests by internal and external officials, parents, faculty and or staff; reporting of federal crime data and all statistical reports of campus judicial actions
  • Serves as an Administrative Hearing Officer for student conduct cases regarding matters that violate the student Code of Conduct.
  • Works with the Director of Community Standards and Title IX to identify, recommend, and implement alternative forms of dispute resolution. Provides progressive ways to educate students who have violated the Student Code of Conduct such as Restorative Justice.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements proactive processes, systems, and modes of delivery of educational programs to promote good citizenship, civic and community engagement among the student body.
  • Conducts investigations into student conduct and student organizational conduct as appropriate. Interviews students and other witnesses involved in conduct hearings and ensures due process to all parties involved in the hearing process.
  • Ensures the preparation and administration of effective and timely student conduct hearings, which includes: pre-hearing meetings, attendance at hearings, communication with accused students, complainants, witnesses, and parents. Ensures accurate and appropriate administration and communication of notifications and documentation of hearing schedules (date, time and location); reviews all evidence submitted for hearings.
  • Conducts training for all administrative hearing officers, appeal panel members, assigned advocates, and assigned investigators in all aspects of the student conduct hearing processes and related University policy.
  • Educates the University on related Student Code of Conduct standard and processes.
  • Ensures all discipline referrals are addressed in a consistent and timely manner through appropriate student conduct processes and procedures.
  • Monitors and evaluates, in partnership with Public Safety and Residence Life, college policy enforcement processes and procedures. Identifies and recommends ongoing improvements.
  • Assists in the annual publication of the Code of Student Conduct
  • Assists in the implementation and evaluation of educational programming and resource materials at the University in areas of integrity, student ethical development, risk management, hazing prevention, health and safety, bystander intervention, and issues regarding student conduct.
  • Works collaboratively with the Wellness Professionals (Counseling and Health) to manage the sanctions associated with alcohol and drug violations, as well as anger management.
  • Assist with outreach initiatives to educate the University community on student disciplinary policies and procedures including maintaining the departmental website, presenting workshops, creating brochures, and creating and implementing public relation campaigns.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate educational media (i.e. pamphlets, student conduct website) and educational programming for the Code of Student Conduct.
  • Interacts with the campus community and external stakeholders around student conduct issues and responsibilities
  • Assists in tracking and addressing academic dishonesty violations that fall under the Code of Student Conduct due to the nature and scope of the violation.
  • Manages the Maxient system ensuring system health and appropriate maintenance for all incoming reports, forms, letters, and cases housed within this database system.
  • Serves as the Appeals Officer for appeals of JSUPD-issued parking citations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Community Standards and Title IX.  

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned Master’s or terminal degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field by position start date.
  • Graduate or professional experience in student conduct or related field

OR

  • Bachelor's degree
  • and 2-3 years of relevant experience with handling investigations or conduct-related issues
